“I’ve been clean for five and a half years and, in recovery you celebrate your ‘recovery birthday’ by telling your story. It’s a chance to look at your progress and for me; the positives always seem to outweigh the negatives. The 12-Step program teaches you to switch your perspective towards the positives, as well as consider other people’s perspectives and to practice empathy. ‘Sacrifice the Weak’ is just an easier mentality, it is far less work to place blame on someone else. The people that promote this rhetoric are capitalizing on fear and what it’s like to be misunderstood, I understand their fear. But this ‘Let the weak die’ attitude affects far more people than they see. I’m very productive in my physically demanding job, I spur the economy along, but I also contribute to society by raising my kids. Even if my only purpose is to raise my children, if I’m removed, what happens to them? What path are they then set on? What impact does removing ‘the Weak’ have on those that care about them? Remove a kid with an autoimmune disease and their parents are devastated. You cannot quantify the worth of a human life and those that love them.”
