“I was living in L.A. during the Rodney King trial and I remember thinking, ‘Finally! With all this evidence, they won’t be able to get away with it this time!’ but they did. My friends and I went up into the hills and watched the city burn. Then over time, people forgot and the brutality just kept happening. The murder of George Floyd seems to have hit unlike any other because we were all stuck at home. You can’t deny his murder when it keeps getting pushed in your face and there’s nowhere to run. The protests feel different this time; it’s the young people that are standing up against police brutality. I’ve cried far too many times watching the news recently but maybe this has been one positive aspect of the pandemic; global protests against racism.”
